A Wanderluster’s Guide to Staying Sane at Home

This pandemic has grounded all our travel plans for the foreseeable future. We’re stuck home for our own health and safety. Staying home saves lives.

And sucks balls… It’s hard to stay positive when things are miserable. Hell, I could have been celebrating my birthday in a beach bar in Bali right now after a 3-hour spa treatment but what can you do. Quarantine it is.

One thing though - it’s not the end. We’re all on the same boat and that’s the SS Home headed to nowhere except the occasional trip to the bathroom and the kitchen. Okay I lied, the trips to the kitchen are frequent.

The point of this article is to pick up your melancholy self off the floor, attempt to reset your mood and try to inspire you with some helpful-ish tips for us wanderers to make the best of the situation.

1. ORGANIZE YOUR SH!T

If the force of wanderlust is strong with you then most likely you’ve got trips scheduled this year that have been bought and paid for last year. Bummer. I feel you. Canceled plans mean canceled flights, tickets, and other pre-booked activities. So the first thing you do is rebook, refund, or postpone. Get your stuff in order. When the time comes, you can make use of your airline travel credit and go.

2. PUT AWAY YOUR STUFF

If you’re one of those people who live out of a suitcase and never unpack because you know you’ll be leaving anyway, it’s time to face the music. Put those extra clothes and toiletry kit back in your closet and drawers, clear out your suitcase, fold your backpack, make space for other things in your room. It’s going to be a long while before you can head out again but the time will come.

3. START A PROJECT

If you’ve taken a million photos and videos on your phone from all your past adventures then now is the perfect time to organize out your photo album and gallery. Instead of leaving your photos to just sit pretty, why don’t you make a project out of it? Create a travel music video, post it on Instagram, write a blog, make a scrapbook or sketchbook. Have fun with all the photos and knickknacks you collected. Keep yourself busy and surrounded by happy memories.

4. EXPLORE LOCAL PLACES

Your city or town has a lot of amazing hidden places just waiting to be discovered. When the quarantine ends, get out and explore your home. Living in Cebu means you are just a couple hours away from the best sceneries and views in the country. When it’s safe to leave, drive up to the mountains, head to the beach, hop on to another island. See new spots, taste new flavors, go back to places you’ve been before and see them in a whole new light.

5. MAKE NEW PLANS

This pandemic is just a little detour in your life. Don’t let it bring you down. Things may never be the same but change is good. Always continue to make plans. Fill up that bucket list with new experiences. Keep dreaming.

In the meantime…

Stay safe. Stay home. Wear a mask. Wash your hands.

I’m a leave you with this nugget of wisdom from my friend Jaclyn:

EAT WELL, TRAVEL OFTEN

BUT IF YOU CAN’T TRAVEL AT ALL, EAT WELL AT HOME.

Ciao! Bon Apetit! ✳︎
