For the first time ever, White Brick decided to join the annual 36 Days of Type project on Instagram, together as a team. Well, more like 26 Days of Type since we never planned on doing the numbers. It just didn’t make sense with our concept in mind.
Started in Barcelona by graphic designers from Nina Sans and Rafa Goicoechea, the project is a 36-day celebration of typography and creativity. 36 Days of Type is a yearly open call inviting designers, illustrators, visual artists, type lovers and creatives from all around the globe to share their interpretation on the letters and numbers from the alphabet. It’s a global and simultaneous act of creativity around type and letterforms.
From the get-go the goal was to make the project uniquely White Brick and focus on our brand of Play and Create - meaning everything we did would be created from scratch and we made sure a lot of play was happening. In other words, in true White Brick form, we decided go do the more complicated option. I mean, of course we could have gone digital but hey, where’s the fun in that.
All the letters were handmade using materials and items lying around the studio and at home. When quarantine came, each one stepped up to contribute at least one letter that they could do in their house using vegetables, salt, fruits, tea, ice, wires, what have you. Some letter were totally extra and I’m talking about playing with fire, assembling pipes, landscaping, painting, baking cookies and there were even syringes, bubble wrap and ink involved. The icing on the cake was a Quarantine Selfie with everyone. Guess which letter that fell under?
The results were crazy and hilarious. Of course, none of the concepts were serious. I mean come on, what would you expect, kicking off with A is for A Newspaper. That tongue-in-cheek theme carried over all the way up to Z is for Zigzag stick. You get the picture.
The point is, we had fun the in process and it was something that we all looked forward to under quarantine. After all, Apart is the New Together.
